About the event

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service in 1994 and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort.

Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – “What is your position in times of challenge and controversy?”

Join the Volunteer Center of Greater Battle Creek and Kalamazoo and the City of Kalamazoo in this annual day of service, January 15, 2024.  T-shirts and lunch vouchers will be available at your volunteer site. Register to volunteer here.

Be sure to join us at the end of the day for the wreath laying ceremony at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park (507 N. Rose St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007). A commemorative walk will begin at 4:00 pm led by the Loy Norrix Drumline in front of Metro (across the street from MLK Park), and will end in the park with community members speaking about the teachings, life, and legacy of Dr. King. Free hot chocolate will be provided by Coffee Rescue.
