Gryphon Place began as a youth drug drop-in center called Gryphon House in 1970. We launched an overdose aid drug information line, which later became the current helpline 269-381-HELP. Between 1980 and 2000, we became a suicide prevention center as certified by the American Association of Suicidology and implemented a youth suicide prevention curriculum in schools called The Gatekeeper Program.
Today, we are the leading agency for suicide prevention in the area and we continue to offer several suicide prevention resources, including the 24/7 helpline, The Gatekeeper Program, and a survivors of suicide loss support group. Gryphon Place is part of the statewide 2-1-1 information and referral system, which connects people to a variety of resources, including housing or utility payment assistance. We are the local volunteer center for Kalamazoo. Gryphon Place also offers Restorative Justice trainings and has a Restorative Practices program in schools, which is often used as an alternative to punitive discipline in order to keep students in the classroom.
