Suicide Prevention Training and Awareness

Gryphon Place provides an integrated approach in order to reduce the incidence of suicide and suicidal behaviors. Our Comprehensive Services are modeled after the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, and range from broad community and school education to customized training and targeted interventions. We support help-seeking behaviors in all settings including the family, schools and the general community.

Our Prevention Program:

  • Supports public information campaigns that reduce the stigma of suicide;
  • Promotes awareness of risk factors and warning signs of suicide (Risk Factors and Warning Signs);
  • Provides extensive training in Gatekeeper Skills of "identifying, asking, and referring;
  • Encourages the treatment of mental and substance abuse disorders.

safeTALK

safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares anyone 15 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper.

Over the course of their training, safeTALK participants will learn to:

  • Notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts might be present
  • Recognize that invitations for help are often overlooked
  • Move beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss, and avoid suicide
  • Apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe
  • Know community resources and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to them for further help

Training features:

  • Presentations and guidance from a LivingWorks registered trainer
  • Access to support from a local community resource person
  • Hands-on skills practice and development
